The Bourne Supremecy

Initial thoughts

A new and fresh story line, strongly developed characters, and realistic fight scenes, complete with shaky cam and MacGyver resourcefulness. This movie has everything both genders could possibly want - gripping suspense and immersive action for the guys and heart tugging emotions for the girls.

Short summary (Spoiler alerts!)

It starts out with Bourne and his girlfriend in India; they are still trying to figure out who Bourne really is because of his amnesia. She is killed by an assassin before Bourne attempts to flee the country.

Two CIA agents are assassinated in Berlin because they were carrying some very valuable files and cash. The CIA blames Bourne and seeks to kill him. But further into their investigation and manhunt, something more cunning seems afoot than they first realized.

Story – 18/20

-       Amazing new plot line and devices with very clever ways of keeping the viewer on the edge of his seat.

-       New way of telling the spy/assassin story, the clever story line slowly reveals information about the antagonist(s); by doing this, whenever the audience feels like Bourne is safe, or that things are about to calm down, something chaotic comes out of nowhere.

Character – 14/20

-       Most of the characters have strong development, due to an appropriate amount of screen time for many of the main characters. Very memorable main characters. Some minor characters could have used more screen time to help the audience develop a connection to them.

Acting Quality – 14/15

-       Matt Damon portrayed the role of an amnesia-induced assassin extremely well. While doing his assignments, Damon portrays Bourne as knowing what he is doing, but also adds a certain doubt to the character, like Bourne is still trying to adapt to his false Jason Bourne title.

-        Some CIA agents can be over the top or downright unrealistic in their portrayal, but because of the clever dialogue and writing you hardly notice little flaws such as this.

Fighting/Special effects – 19/20

-        In most shooters, there would be no injuries or very unrealistic combat, not so here. When Bourne falls, or gets hurt, he reacts to that injury, and if that injury is bad enough, it will even follow him into the next few scenes.

-        The shaky cam used in many of the on-foot action scenes brings lots of realism to the combat, making you feel like you’re right there in the room.

-        Impressive special effects (explosions) pop up occasionally, although they aren’t all throughout this action movie, which is a welcoming change from “blow-em-ups” such as the expendables 1-2

Soundtrack – 5/5

-        Spectacular soundtrack, listen to it once, and you will be humming it all night.

Writing – 20/20

-        The writing was spectacular, with tons of gripping suspense. The writing makes everyone but Bourne seem like a bad guy. Although Bourne is very violent and hurts innocent people occasionally, he always seems to make up for his bad decisions by doing something good later. And since most of the other major characters in the movie are doing nothing but trying to get him, you feel more connected to Bourne, and thus want to root for him more.

-        Once the suspense starts to drop and the audience begins to calm down, the film throws more at you, even stronger and more intense than before. And just when the audience thinks that the climax has arrived and that Bourne is safe, it throws more suspense at you. It is a roller coaster of suspense.

Final Verdict

90/100

With an outstanding new story line, interesting plot devices, memorable and well written characters. Realistic action scenes, realistic dialogue, and even some heart tugging emotional scenes. If you like action suspense movies, with heart-gripping emotions, this is the perfect movie to watch with your girlfriend. Go rent this movie right now, you won’t regret it.
